CANADA -- A Kelowna couple is trying to track down the owner of a dog that attacked them at Glenmore dog park on Monday.
The couple, who don't wish to be named, were walking their two Schnauzers about 1 p.m., and say they were the only people at the park when they arrived.
Both dogs were off leash, following their owners, when another two people arrived with a large brown dog, possibly a Rottweiler.
“We had done a lap and gone past the couple with their dog, our dogs were yapping as they usually do, but the big dog didn’t show any signs of aggression,” said the man.
We looped past them a second time and nothing happened, but when we came across them a third time, the dog lunged at our dog."
The owner of the big dog apparently tried to hold his animal back, but the Schnauzer owner says he was unable and struggling.
“So I grabbed onto the dog as well, as the man couldn’t hold it back from our dog, we were both trying to hold onto the dog’s halter,” he says.
His wife managed to pick up the Schnauzer and started to walk away.
“The big dog started to drag me and the man, but it got away, jumped at my wife and nipped her face.”
The woman dropped the Schnauzer, and the big dog lunged at the smaller dog's back, sinking its teeth in. The second Schnauzer was also caught up in the kerfuffle, but did not appear to have any wounds.
“It clamped onto our Schnauzer, Stella, and the owner punched (the large) dog in the head to get it to release, and it finally did. They got the leash on the big dog, and they left to their vehicle,” he says. “The man did make a comment he would meet us at the vet.”
His wife and the dogs fled for the exit while her husband grabbed their truck.
As they left, they told more people arriving at the park to tell the man with the big dog they would be going to Burtch Animal Hospital.
“The man started to walk back in the park towards us, but our dog was bleeding and so was my wife.”
She says the dog had pulled at her scarf choking her, and that she was scratched by the dog’s teeth.
Stella suffered two large puncture wounds and is recovering after more than $1,000 in vet bills.
The couple hopes to speak with the owner of the large dog.
“We are concerned this may happen again," said the husband.
The other couple arrived at the park in a white four-door Jeep and may have called the dog Caesar.
Anyone who may have witnessed the attack or spoke to them as they were leaving is asked to contact the couple through Castanet by emailing Jennifer@castanet.net.
UPDATE TO STORY:
The owner of a dog that allegedly attacked a Schnauzer at Glenmore dog park on Monday has come forward.
The woman was extremely apologetic and told the pet owners she was very upset about what her dog did.
During the confusion at the dog park, when the owners of the Schnauzer were getting the injured dog in their car, the other dog’s owners didn’t get the message about meeting them at the animal hospital.
Why didn't they call the police to self-report???
They didn't leave without exchanging information on purpose, according to Stella the Schnauzer’s owners.
They tell Castanet the large dog’s owner is taking her dog to training immediately and will be dealing with its behavioural issues accordingly.
The owner has also offered to pay for some of Stella’s vet bill.
