Police say the attack happened last Thursday afternoon. Family members of the victim say a 10-year-old girl was attacked outside an apartment by a pit bull. The incident happened on Harlem Road in Amherst.
Police say the dog ran outside and bit the girl in the face.
Family of the victim say the girl suffered injuries to her scalp and needed surgery and that she's been receiving medical treatment since the attack.
Owner Kristy Heberling blamed the child saying she 'provoked' her vicious Pit Bull into attacking her in the face. This, despite, Heberling clearly having invited the child and her parents to her home.
One question going forward is whether this dog will be labeled a dangerous dog. Amherst Police say they've submitted paperwork to a judge requesting a hearing on this matter. A judge would have to make a final determination on the dog.
It's still unclear what triggered the pit bull.
Um, I can tell you what "triggered the pit bull". Read below: it's in its nature.
For now, the dog is being held by the Town of Clarence animal control as the issue of what to do next is handled in court.
The victim's mother declined comment to 2 On Your Side. A woman who identified herself as the owner of the dog decline comment to 2 On Your Side Monday.

The article says "It's still unclear what triggered the pit bull." Um, well I can tell you what 'triggered' it:
One day a scorpion asks a frog to carry him across the river. The frog, afraid of being stung during the trip, declines helping the scorpion.
The scorpion argues that if it stung the frog, both would sink and he would also drown, so for his benefit he would never sting him.
The frog eventually agrees and carries the scorpion across the river until midway, the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both to drown.
As they slowly sink into the water the frog asks why he had stung him, crying out, "Now we shall both die!".
The scorpion simply points out that, “I had no choice; it's in my nature“.
