FLORIDA -- An Auburndale woman is facing nearly three dozen animal cruelty charges after deputies reported finding more than 80 animals in poor condition on her property.
County Judge Barry Bennett on Wednesday set bail at $18,000 for 59-year-old Christine Fuchs of 1250 Loop Road in Auburndale on four felony charges of animal cruelty and 28 misdemeanor charges of confining an animal without sufficient food or water, according to her Polk County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Fuchs did not cooperate with investigators, the report said, and asked for a lawyer when she was interviewed.
Deputies searched the property about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant, the report said, after a detective saw "two horses that had overgrown hooves that had turned upward and a third horse that was limping in pain on the property."
For all of those 88 animals, deputies found one bag of all-stock feed and half a bag of chicken scratch, the report said.
In addition to the three hobbling horses, the deputy saw one of the goats had a severe udder infection leaving the udder about a half a foot long and 5 inches wide. Deputies determined all of the goats were underweight, had lice and had signs of parasites.
One of the dogs found inside the house was a large Great Pyrenees that had a stomach covered in tumors, one of which was 4 inches across and was hanging to the ground, the report said.
The Sheriff's Office uses the Tuft's University body score chart developed to determine the level of an animal's injuries in an animal cruelty case. The scale runs from 1 to 5, best to worst. The dog the Sheriff's Office found was a 5.
The four felony charges stem from the dog, the goat and the two horses, while the 28 misdemeanor charges come from 25 goats, the other horse the detective saw and two other dogs.
