CANADA -- A 74-year-old Vars man has been given 12 months’ probation and fined $1,000 after he dragged his young German shepherd dog behind his truck for almost half a kilometer last year.
Adrien Paquette was also forbidden from owning or living with animals for three years.
Paquette had pleaded guilty in June to willfully causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal and causing damage to an animal by way of dragging.
In March 2014, Paquette tied his then-two-year-old German shepherd named Tyson to his pickup and dragged the animal for about 500 meters to punish it for running away from home.
The dog was eventually surrendered to the humane society for medical care for cuts and scrapes to his paws and mouth and a bad ear infection not related to the abuse.
Tyson recovered quickly and was adopted by a family, where he is happy and healthy, according to the humane society.
Paquette’s fine will be in the form of a $1,000 donation to the Ottawa Humane Society.
