Connecticut: Carlos Trinidad, 30, tortured his girlfriend's cat; told cops he doesn't know what the big deal is

CONNECTICUT --  Collins Street man remains jailed on charges that include nearly beating to death his girlfriend's cat.

Carlos Trinidad, 30, faces charges of cruelty to animals, disorderly conduct, tampering with evidence and second-degree reckless endangerment. He has not posted $250,000 bail.

Hartford police went to 280 Collins St. on Jan. 19 on an animal cruelty complaint but also found the aftermath of a domestic disturbance.

Trinidad's girlfriend called police to report that he had hung her cat. When police arrived, the black cat was on the living room couch, shaking and wet near its face, according to a report. Police said the cat was cold to the touch.

Trinidad told police, according to a report, that the cat was wet because he'd given it a bath. He said that the he and his girlfriend got into an argument and at one point he kicked the cat.

The girlfriend told police that when she arrived home the cat was hanging from a closet door, according to the report. A shoe string was around the cat's abdomen.

During a physical fight, she told police, Trinidad kicked the cat, threatened to throw it out a window, threatened to stab it with a knife, threw it at her and then, after she fled the apartment, put it into a white plastic shopping bag and smashed it against the apartment walls, according to the report.

The cat was crying, the woman said, and had blood near its nose. Police said Trinidad washed the blood off when he bathed the cat, according to the report. The woman was not injured during the ordeal.

When police questioned Trinidad about the cat, according to a report, he said he didn't understand what the big deal was since the cat was still alive.

Hartford's animal control officer took the cat to a vet for treatment. Although still alive, it had a very low body temperature and blood in its eyes, police said.

The cat was still alive Tuesday but may have suffered brain damage, an animal control officer said.
