FLORIDA -- A one-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by a pit bull while playing in his backyard Friday night, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.
The boy's mother, Sarah Hunter, told deputies she and her son were playing in the backyard of their Commerce Avenue home in rural DeLeon Springs about 5 p.m. when the pit bull bit him in the face and on the head in an attack that apparently was unprovoked, sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant said.
Officials said the dog left the 18-month-old boy with several cuts on the left side of his face near his eye.
The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Gant said. His injuries were said not to be life threatening.
Hunter told deputies the brown and black pit bull is homeless and wanders around their neighborhood. She said she had been giving it food and water for about a month.
That's a first. I've never heard of a stray dog being described as "homeless".
She told deputies the dog was wearing a blue collar and ran off after the attack.
Volusia County Animal Control officials couldn't find the dog and advised neighbors to call animal control if they see it so it can be quarantined.
