FLORIDA -- A 4-year-old girl was playing in her Richlands neighbor’s backyard when the neighbor’s dog attacked the child and the child’s mother before another neighbor shot the animal, which survived, according to Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
The dog attacked the child and her mother about 5:30 p.m. Monday behind a home on Coral Ridge Road in Richlands, Maj. Christopher Thomas said. A neighbor heard the woman and child calling for help, he added.
The child’s mother was in her home’s backyard next door when the large dog attacked. Thomas was uncertain of the breed.
Onslow County Animal Services is investigating the attack.
Animal Control Officer Richard Gabbert declined to comment on the dog’s status Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s currently under investigation,” he said.
Thomas said the child had minor injuries.
She and her mother were treated and released from Onslow Memorial Hospital, he added.
“The dog bit the 4-year-old child on the right forearm and wrist,” Thomas said. “The child screamed. The mother of the child heard the child and reported that she jumped the fence and the dog let go of the girl and attacked the mother.”
The mother had injuries to both hands, wrists and arms, he said.
“She was scratched up quite a bit,” Thomas said.
The dog’s owner tried to free the mother.
“Another neighbor arrived and he had a firearm,” Thomas said. “To get the dog to stop attacking, he shot the dog.”
It was shot in the side. Thomas said the dog did not die in the shooting.
“The animal was in a fenced yard where kids were playing,” Thomas said. “We’ve not had other reports in that area about that dog. I don’t anticipate any charges; however, it’s an open investigation.”
