Florida: Stolen puppy, traded for crack and money, found at local animal hospital

FLORIDA -- The Yorkshire terrier puppy stolen from a Largo pet store and then traded for drugs and cash has been recovered, Largo police say.

The dog, which police say was stolen by Wayne Junior Barfield on Jan. 12 from All About Puppies on Ulmerton Road, is being checked out by a veterinarian who identified the dog via its microchip.

On Jan. 14, detectives identified Barfield as the suspect who allegedly stole the $1,600 dog. Barfield was captured on video placing the dog down his shirt and exiting the store.

A tipster then led detectives to the Lealman area of Pinellas County where additional witnesses were interviewed. Barfield was arrested on Jan. 15 and charged with grand theft.

Surveillance video caught him stealing the puppy

Detectives say that on Jan. 12, Barfield was driven to Fourth Street and 75th Avenue North in St. Petersburg, where he allegedly traded the dog for crack cocaine and cash.

Barfield, who is being held at the Pinellas County Jail on $5,353 bond, acknowledged he disposed of the dog, but would not disclose to whom, police say.

On Jan. 20, Largo police detective Lance Moore was notified that an animal hospital in St. Petersburg was treating the Yorkshire Terrier stolen from All About Puppies last week. After seeing media reports about the theft of the dog, the animal hospital scanned the dog's microchip and positively identified it. They then called authorities.

Detectives were speaking with the family who brought the dog to the vet to determine who has been in possession of the puppy for the last week.

The temporary family, who had named the dog "Cookie," took the dog to the vet when it became very sick three days ago. The animal hospital says the Yorkie is doing well and will be returned to All About Puppies when it is medically cleared.

This investigation is continuing.
