Indiana: Joshua Wilson, 31, charged with animal cruelty for starving his dog

INDIANA -- A Muncie man faces a criminal charge over his alleged failure to care for his dog.

Joshua James Wilson, 31, of the 500 block of West 10th Street, is charged with cruelty to an animal, a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to a year in jail.

According to a Muncie Police Department report, officers on Sept. 18 were called to a home in the 200 block of East 15th Street that had been rented to Wilson. The owner of the property said she had been unable to contact the Muncie man for more than two weeks.

An officer reported finding “a small brown pit bull with something wrong with its left eye” inside the house.

The animal “was extremely thin and had hair falling out,” he added.

Authorities said they found no food or water set out for the dog or a cat, which appeared to be in better health, a report said.

“The apartment was extremely dirty with dog feces all over the upstairs bedrooms,” the officer wrote.

An animal control officer took the pets to the city shelter.

While the charge against Wilson was filed Oct. 16, a warrant for his arrest was not issued until Jan. 6, after he failed to show up for an initial hearing in Muncie City Court.

He was arrested Saturday night, and has since been released from the Delaware County jail. The next hearing in his case is set for Feb. 1.

Wilson was convicted of battery in 2010.
