Maryland: The chilly journey of a piglet that got lost in (and rescued from) the blizzard

MARYLAND -- This weekend's blizzard hit the east coast hard, and Facebook user Sarah Pekkanen decided to make the best of the storm by spending the weekend at a nearby Maryland-area ski resort with friends and their children.

Little did they know they’d be embarking on a heroic journey to rescue a baby pig.

As Pekkanen describes in her Facebook post, her friends Perry and Liz were out with their kids Saturday night when they happened to discover a baby pig trapped in the snow and ice by the side of the highway. The piglet was half-frozen and stuck in the path of a huge snow plow that was headed right for it.

Thankfully, the family managed to free the pig before the plow buried it. Then, they warmed it up and snuck it back to their room at the resort by wrapping it in a sweatshirt.

"I explained to the kids that building an enclosure in the backyard wasn't really a realistic idea," Perry Smith told Today.com. "He was going to grow to be around 700 pounds, after all. And he should be around other pigs.”

So they decided to take it to Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Maryland. Smith said giving up then piglet, which they named Wee Wee, was an important process for the kids go through.

"It's the type of thing that you realize should be done, and that's all we've ever tried to articulate to our kids: Do the right thing — you'll know what it is when that happens."
