North Carolina: Starved dog found in Fayetteville apartment; Frankie Barker, 30, and Danielle Durocher, 27, charged with animal cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA --  A Fayetteville couple has been charged with felony cruelty to animals after authorities say a dog was found starved to death in their apartment.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says in a news release that Cumberland County Animal Control officers responded to a call Tuesday in which someone said a dog had been abandoned in an apartment.

Authorities had the property manager open the door the next day, at which time officers say they found one dead dog and another one living. There was no food or water in the dogs' crates.

Director of Animal Control Dr. John Lauby says a necropsy showed that the dead dog had starved.

Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Control, said the cause of death was starvation. The dog weighed 15 pounds at the time of the necropsy. Lauby said the dog should have weighed around 35 pounds.

Frankie Lynn Barker, 30, and Danielle Elizabeth Durocher, 27, have been arrested and taken to the Cumberland County Jail and were give a $10,000 secured bond each.
