Papillon named Stewie is mauled to death by loose pit bull

RHODE ISLAND -- A woman is left heartbroken after her dog was mauled to death by a pit bull while out on a walk in Warwick. Wednesday night, the owner of that loose dog has come forward turning the animal over to animal control

The family of the dog that was killed tell ABC 6 they are happy the pit bull is off the street so that it can't harm any other animals or people, but are frustrated the pit bull's owner may only get a slap on the wrist.

Michelle Noel shared photos of her 4-year-old Papillon, Stewie.

"He meant everything to me. He was my little buddy. He was with me all the time," she says.

The tiny dog was mauled to death by a loose pit bull Sunday while she was walking him at her sister's condo in Warwick. The vet was unable to save her best friend.

"They were not able to do anything for him. He had critical internal injuries and he passed," said Noel. "It's very difficult."

Noel had her back turned when out of nowhere the dogs appeared and the pit bull attacked, grabbing Stewie by the neck and tossing him.

"I screamed, 'no!' He dropped him. Grabbed him again. This time he pulled him right out of his leash," explained Noel.

The gray, blue-nosed pit bull and a black and white husky that was running off leash with it, took off in the opposite direction. The pit bull's owner turned the dog over to animal control Monday afternoon.

The dog will remain at animal control until a vicious dog hearing is held. The husky was found not to be aggressive and was allowed to go home.

Noel said the owner is to blame in the situation, "for not having their dogs in the house on a leash or confined to a pen or some sort."

According to police, this is the first offense for the pit bull, so it was not be euthanized. It's unclear at this time if the owner of the loose dogs will be cited. No hearing date has been set.
