Rhode Island: Third person charged in Exeter animal cruelty case

RHODE ISLAND -- A third person has been charged with animal cruelty in the case out of Exeter.

In December, Donald and Kathleen Perkins were in court on animal cruelty accusations after state police said more than a dozen dogs were left at their home while the couple was away on vacation.

Now, 21-year-old Sarah Ireland of East Providence is being charged, too.

State police told NBC 10 News she was supposed to be looking after some of the dogs.

Last month, police said neighbors called to complain of dogs barking at the Perkins' rural property.

Investigators told NBC 10 then that six papillons were found in crates inside the home with little water or food. Their paws were raw and discolored from standing in their waste.

Ten golden retrievers were also found outside.

The dogs were taken to shelters and the Perkins were brought to court when they returned home.

Now, police are saying that Ireland was the alleged caretaker.

After going to Ireland's home, NBC 10 reached her by phone. She said she could not comment and provided her lawyer's name. NBC 10 left messages for him and also followed up at the Perkins house to see if they wanted to comment on the new developments. There was no answer, though someone was home.

A phone message left for the Perkins has not been returned.

Donald Perkins told NBC 10 last month that his lawyer advised him not to speak publicly.
