TENNESSEE -- A man trying to protect his pet dog from two attacking pit bull dogs about 8 a.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of Old Shiloh Road suffered injuries that required hospital treatment, Greeneville police Officer Larry Gilbert said in a report.
The victim's pet was killed in the unprovoked pit bull attack.
The pit bull owners were issued summonses for violations of laws dealing with animals and animal husbandry.
The victim's wife told officers that her 53-year-old husband, of Old Shiloh Circle, was outside walking his dog on a leash when the two pit bulls attacked, killing it.
The man's wife told police her husband attempted to keep the attacking dogs off their pet and was bit in the hand.
When police arrived, the man was being assisted into the house by his wife. The victim had blood on his pants, coat, and hands and was unable to talk to officers at the scene, the report said.
Greene County-Greeneville EMS was called and the man was taken to Laughlin Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The owners of the dogs, identified as Travion Jackson and Candace Cavaliere, were later located at 122 Cumberland Drive. They told police that the pit bulls "had gotten out of the dog pen that they had," the report said.
Jackson and Cavaliere could not provide any proof of up-to-date rabies vaccinations for the dogs. A summons was issued to each to appear Wednesday in General Sessions Court for dogs running at large and the animals not having a current rabies vaccination.
