TENNESSEE -- A Hawkins County couple were charged with animal cruelty Sunday after the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to repeated complaints of a pit bull chained outside with no food or water.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday HCSO Deputy Gary Lawson arrived at 942 Tuggle Hill Road just outside of Rogersville where he reportedly found a pit bull on a log chain showing signs of malnourishment.
Lawson said, “All of his bones were showing through his skin and fur.”
While Lawson was assessing the pit bull three small dogs came out from under the residence and were “acting very aggressive” toward him.
All four dogs were placed in the custody of the Abandoned Angels Inc. Animal Rescue in Hawkins County.
The HCSO wasn’t able to make contact with the owners of the dogs until Sunday morning.
Walter Clifton Miller, 42, of that address; and Leslie Marie Correll, 36, 154 Greer-Johnson Road, Surgoinsville were each charged with one count of animal cruelty for the pit bull, as well as three counts of allowing dogs to run at large for the three smaller dogs.
“The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office has received complaints on the dogs since Sept. 21, 2015, Lawson stated in his report. “Deputy John Tunnell spoke with Walter Miller on Jan. 14 in reference to the dogs, and Walter stated he started treating the brown dog for worms one month ago.”
Correll has a previous conviction for allowing livestock to run at large in 2015. She was released from the Hawkins County Jail Sunday on $1,000 bond.
As of Tuesday Miller remained held on $1,000 bond.
Both are scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in Hawkins County Sessions Court.
