UNITED KINGDOM -- PC Joanna McCormack was on duty and trying to make arrest a man at a home in Ten Bell Court near St Benedicts Street when she was attacked by a mastiff type dog.
The 32-year-old had been called to arrest a man who was wanted for various offences.
She was stood outside at around 6pm when the dog came out from within the home and bit her arm as she tried to fight it off.
PC McCormack had not entered the property at the time of the attack and was still standing in a public place, the Norfolk Police Federation said.
Paul Ridgway, chairman of Norfolk Police Federation, said: “This was a nasty incident that the officer encountered. It is not appropriate to comment on the circumstances of the attack until they have been fully investigated but the incident does highlight the dangers that officers face on a daily basis when they can get unexpectedly attacked.
“It also highlights the need for dog owners to take responsibility to control their pets. The officer is recovering from her injuries and has been given welfare support from Norfolk Constabulary, the Police Federation and the national Police Welfare Support program. We hope she makes a full recovery quick.”
A man was arrested in connection with the incident and is being held in custody at Wymondham Police Station. The dog involved in the attack has since been put down.
PC McCormack is now recovering from her injuries at home and is said to be in shock from the incident.
The commotion was heard by neighbour 49-year-old Gary Rayner, who found the bloodied officer outside his home just moments later.
He said: “I was just going out for a drink, when I saw a police officer outside my door. She was kneeling down with her hands on her head. As I came out I asked one of the officers if I could help, and went back in to get a bath towel [to help with the bleeding].
“You could tell she was distressed and I heard another officer say, ‘You have a deep cut, but you will be OK’. I was shocked when I saw it, I thought there had been a knife attack. I’m glad it wasn’t, because that would make me feel uncomfortable.”
