United Kingdom: Simon Manners, 36, appears in court to tell how shocked he was that his American Bulldog tried to kill his neighbor

UNITED KINGDOM -- The owner of a dangerous dog sobbed in court as he heard how it mauled his neighbour and dragged her 12 feet across the garden.

Simon Manners, of Cambridge Street, Batley, had answered the door to speak to neighbour Paula Moules when vicious Snoopy, an American Bulldog, escaped and attacked her.

Manners, 36, pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dog which was dangerously out of control and caused injury.

Kirklees Magistrates Court heard how Snoopy, who has since been destroyed, left wounds on Ms Moules’ arm, hips and the back of her legs.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “The complainant had gone round to the address. While she was having a conversation the children opened the front door.

“That gave the dog the opportunity to get out and attack Ms Moules. She put her arm up to protect her throat, but the dog pulled her onto the ground.

“It pulled her 12 feet across the garden. She then [ran from] the property and was caught at the gate and bitten on the hip area.

“She has really deep bite wounds to the right forearm and two marks to her right hip which are two inches long and surrounded by bruising.”

The court heard how even Manners himself was injured by Snoopy when he put him into a cage for police to take away.

Emma Haley, for Manners, said: “He does understand the full gravity of the situation. This was an unfortunate accident.”

Manners received a 20-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and pay £750 in compensation.
