WASHINGTON -- The bones in six-year-old Hope’s body are still visible nearly two weeks after the black pit bull - labrador mix was safely captured by Columbia County Animal Control Officer Roger Kadell.
Hope was one of six malnourished and severely neglected dogs reported running loose in the Goble area on Jan. 7. Five of the dogs, including Hope, were rescued by Kadell, though one — a large, brown-and-white dog — is still on the loose.
The five dogs, three of which are four-month-old boxer-pit bull puppies, have been treated for internal parasites and are being nursed back to health. The puppies already have adopters, said Lisa Beggio, program manager for Columbia Humane Society, though they won’t be sent home with their new owners until later this week.
Hope and Chance, both boxer-mixes, still are in need of foster homes and, eventually, forever homes, Beggio said. Hope is still too weak to be spayed, so it will be a couple weeks before she can be sent home with a new owner. Chance will be able to go home within a week.
“When (Hope) came in she was just lying there (in the kennel), and she would just vibrate and shake,” Beggio said.
Over time, though, Hope has become more confident.
“She’s just the sweetest thing ever,” Beggio said. “(She has) definitely had a turnaround emotionally, but physically it’s going to take a while.”
Beggio said there are no leads regarding who neglected the dogs. Hope has multiple scars on her face, and her teeth are worn down, which indicates she’s been chewing on rocks, Beggio said.
“They’ve had a hard life,” she said of the dogs.
Columbia County Animal Control is seeking information regarding the dogs’ owner or owners. Anyone with information is asked to contact Kadell through Columbia County Dispatch at 503-397-1521.
