ARIZONA -- A Valley man has been indicted on a felony charge of animal cruelty for allegedly taking and killing a family’s dog last year.
According to the indictment, Lance Golurn Barkhurst “intentionally or knowingly did subject a dog, an animal, to cruel mistreatment.”
The story of Lucky the Chihuahua dates back to Sept. 30, 2015.
That’s when Lucky went missing. He was last seen at his home, snuggling in bed with a sleeping child. By morning, he was gone.
In the weeks that followed, Lucky’s loved ones searched nearby neighborhoods, handed out hundreds of fliers and checked shelters, hoping to find the little dog.“
"It was completely something that caught us by surprise,” said one of Lucky’s owners, Brice Bailey.
As time passed his family hoped Lucky was taken in by a family who just wanted to keep him and care for him.
But on Nov. 17, 2015 the family got horrific news from a Phoenix detective.
According to the Justice for Lucky Facebook page, the family says they learned that a person they knew (and was at the house the night Lucky disappeared) had just been questioned and allegedly admitted to torturing, killing, mutilating, taking pictures of the act and disposing of Lucky's lifeless body in a dumpster.
During the call with a homicide detective, one of Lucky's owners, Chelsea Bailey says she was told that Barkhurst shared pictures of the mutilated dog with friends, bragged about the killing online and told friends how he wanted to be a serial killer just like Dexter Morgan on the Showtime program, Dexter.
"That's why he showed the picture of the dog, as proof that he was a serial killer," said Bailey.
"He had a choice. He could have taken the child or he could have taken the dog, and he chose to take the dog, but we could be sitting here talking about a kid who was kidnapped and murdered," said the family's attorney, John Schill.
The suspect reportedly showed the pictures of his criminal act to others and bragged on social media about the alleged torture and mutilation.
Bailey says Barkhurst's girlfriend viewed the photos and alerted the authorities.
Lucky's owners say hours before lucky disappeared, Barkhurst, a family friend, had shown up out of nowhere needing a place to stay.
They say Barkhurst was gone before anyone woke up and so was the dog, who had been sleeping on the couch with his best friend, 3-year-old Reidyn.
Lucky's loved ones have started a petition, asking Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery that the suspect be "prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Barkhurst is being held in the Towers Jail on $1,800 bail. He's due back in court at the end of March.
