Colorado: Daniel Williams, 50, pleads not guilty to killing two bear cubs

COLORADO -- An Evergreen man accused of shooting and killing two bear cubs last September made his plea Monday morning.

Daniel Clay Williams, 50, appeared at Jefferson County Court and pleaded not guilty to two felonies. He faces charges of an illegal discharge of a firearm and aggravated cruelty to animals. He faces six other misdemeanor charges.

Williams told deputies that he had shot rubber bullets at the bears to scare them away from the trash, but when his dog got loose and fought with the mother bear he used live bullets.

Neighbors had enjoyed watching the mama bear and cubs roaming
around without ever having any issues with them.

Williams hasn't explained why, if the mother bear was "fighting" with his dog, he didn't shoot her. Instead, he shot both of the baby bears, killing one instantly and injuring another so badly that it had to be euthanized by wildlife officers who responded to the scene.

The mama bear ran up a tree and stayed there for 15 hours
before finally leaving to grieve for her babies.

The mother bear climbed a tree and stayed there most of the day following the shootings.

Williams, in his shooting frenzy, also apparently blew a hole in his neighbor's window.
