On Monday, February 1, in cooperation with the Coral Gables Police Department, Rudy Bichara, 36, was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty.
When the emaciated dog was turned in, veterinarians refused to euthanize the miniature pinscher mix and immediately worked on stabilizing him.
"Chocco was found to be 8-9% dehydrated and severely emaciated with no visible body fat and obvious loss of muscle mass. He was provided with fluids and stabilized overnight under the foster care of a staff veterinarian," stated Lilian Bohorquez, media representative for the Miami Dade County Animal Services.
The rescue organization, Miami based, a Way for A Stray has been caring for the dog and has since renamed him Maverick. When the National Pet Rescue Examiner spoke with the rescue founder, Lyndsey Gurowitz described Maverick as doing much better, but he continues to be under the care of the animal hospital where he is being monitored 24/7 for a serious infection.
Maverick has been diagnosed as a diabetic and will need insulin shots for the rest of his life, but he has been gaining weight.
Animal advocates are thankful the shelter pursued animal cruelty charges against Maverick's owner with the purpose of warning pet owners that the abuse and neglect of animals will not be tolerated.
The case is now in the hands of the State Attorney’s Office.
