Georgia: Kimberly Alderman and Eric Hollingshed charged in east Macon after 21 dogs found in 'deplorable' conditions

GEORGIA -- Two 37-year-olds have been arrested after animal welfare officers discovered 21 dogs living in deplorable conditions at an east Macon home.

Kimberly Alderman and Eric Hollingshed are each charged with eight counts of animal cruelty and one count of obstruction after Animal Welfare officers discovered Tuesday the pit bull mixes living in filthy conditions at the house on North Confederate Drive, Macon-Bibb County Animal Welfare Director Sonja Adams said Wednesday.

Nine of the dogs were tethered or shut in a bare, feces-caked concrete kennel outside, Adams said.

Of those, "there was only one dog that was actually a healthy weight," she said. One dog was emaciated and sick with diarrhea.

Alderman and Hollingshed attempted to hide the rest of the 21 dogs inside the house and told officers they only had two large dogs inside, Adams said.

"We did find two adult dogs inside, but the remainder were puppies," Adams said.

The puppies were found in a closet, according to an incident report from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. A deputy noted in the report that the smell inside the home was "similar to a smell that would be found in a farmyard barn," and the floor was covered with feces and dog food.

"It was pretty deplorable -- typical animal cruelty," Adams said. Alderman and Hollingshed were "supplementing their income (by) breeding dogs and selling them. You have to have a breeder's license. ... They didn't have one."

Though only eight of the 21 dogs met legal definitions of animal cruelty, Adams said all the dogs were taken by Macon-Bibb County Animal Welfare because of the squalor.
