JAPAN -- A teenage girl was forced to eat 30 dead goldfish by her mother and the woman's partner as one of a series of sadistic assaults, police have revealed.
The couple killed the girl's pet fish by pouring detergent in their tank and then served them up, ordering the daughter to, "Eat them all," according to Kurume police officials.
The couple were both arrested and indicted last year for physically assaulting the teenager, including tying her to a bed with rope, punching her in the face and burning her tongue with cigarettes. They were rearrested Feb. 16 over the goldfish incident and charged with duress.
The goldfish incident happened in June 2015 at the apartment the three shared after the couple criticized the teenager over the feeding of the pets.
Unemployed mother Yuko Ogata and her self-employed partner Takashi Egami, both 46, are currently on trial on several charges, including confining the daughter resulting in injury.
Ogata has admitted the new charge, while Egami has denied having played a role in the abuse.
