MICHIGAN -- A 21-year-old Freeland man has entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge after being accused of killing a kitten by hitting it with a log and using his hands to break its neck.
Jesse Xavier Smith entered the plea to one count of cruelty to one animal resulting in the animal’s death. In exchange, one felony count of killing or torturing animals is to be dismissed.
Smith was charged after an incident that occurred on June 6 in Lincoln Township.
An affidavit filed in the case states several witnesses reported seeing Smith use a log to hit the kitten, after which he grabbed the kitten and twisted its neck, killing it.
Smith then tossed the body into a nearby log pile.
Michigan State Police investigated the case.
