Nevada: Photo shows heavy facial damage to Metro K9 officer

NEVADA -- A Facebook page shows the extent of damage and surgery needed for a Las Vegas K9 officer after it was stabbed by a suspect during a 12-hour standoff ended Friday morning in the central valley.

"Nicky is home now and doing well," states the home page of the Friends of Las Vegas Police K9s. "Thank you for all the well wishes. He's a little loopy but is in great spirits. Truly has the heart of a champion.!!! Great job in taking down a very bad suspect!"

The face picture of the dog shows at least four major wounds that were closed with stitches during surgery Friday. The exact details on the dog's injuries have not been disclosed.

Nicky is handled by Sgt. Eric Kerns.

SWAT moved in around 9 a.m. Friday and sent in police dogs. The suspect fought back and stabbed K9 officer Nicky several times on the head and around the face. Officers rushed the police dog to an animal hospital for surgery.

The suspect was treated for bite wounds suffered from the dog. The suspect was eventually arrested, but has not been identified yet.
