NEW YORK -- An arrest has been made in the brutal killing of a dog found cut open and left in a Syracuse backyard last week, according to the Syracuse Police Department.
Police say 26-year-old Rayshon Works, of Syracuse, killed the dog and disposed of its body in a yard on the 900 block of Kirkpatrick Street on Jan. 28.
Works is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and failure to provide medical attention to an injured animal.
He is currently being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.
Family members say they received the dreaded phone call from police saying the body of their beloved Caine had been found a couple blocks away two days after he went missing from their home only a few blocks away from where he was found.
Veterinarians at the DeWitt Animal Hospital and investigators with the City of Syracuse Animal Control determined the dog had been intentionally cut open and left to die, according to Syracuse Police.
Gisela Cushman and her family loved having her pit bull Caine right by her side for the last 3 years. She called him her "phat daddy." He was everything to her. Now, she's dealing with the horrifying news that Caine has been killed.
"It's just horrible, because he was a good good dog he ran around all around here and no one ever bothered him. It's just horrible," says Cushman.
While the suspect in the crime is behind bars, the family is still left wondering why someone would do this to their dog.
"I don't think it's really set in. I don't know how anyone can do that to an animal, I really don't. I'm dumbfounded. I don't even have the words," she said.
Cushman's daughter is traumatized and her little 7-year-old son cries daily since he found out his dog Cain isn't coming home again.
