Pennsylvania: Maltese breeder, John Huyard, 26, pleads guilty to animal cruelty

PENNSYLVANIA -- A Lancaster County man has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty following a raid on his property (John Huyard's Maltese World) where three dogs were found in need of veterinary care and sanitary shelter.

John Huyard, 26, of Earl Township will pay a $750 fine for each citation, totaling $5,250. He also is prohibited from owning animals for 630 days, or nearly two years. He also is to pay $4,000 in restitution to the Pennsylvania SPCA.

According to the group, Huyard previously pleaded guilty to multiple dog law violations related to his failure to keep sanitary kennels in late 2015.

According to a statement Monday by the Pennsylvania SPCA, Huyard, who entered the plea by mail Friday, was cited for lack of necessary veterinary care, neglect and lack of sanitary shelter for the animals after officials raided his property Nov. 19. The investigation was launched in response to tips about neglected dogs - some with matted coats - in his kennel, officials said.

Three Maltese-type dogs were removed from the property as evidence and taken to the Pennsylvania SPCA's headquarters in Philadelphia for medical care. Officials said the dogs will be available for adoption pending appeal by Huyard.

"Through the response of our Humane law enforcement officers and Humane Litigation, we were able to adjudicate this case and look forward to the next step in the process - finding homes for all animals involved," said Pennsylvania SPCA CEO Jerry Buckley.
