Texas: Former Brownsville mayor Pat Ahumada Jr. has animal cruelty charges dropped

TEXAS -- Animal cruelty charges against former Brownsville mayor and animal advocate Pat Ahumada Jr. have been dismissed, Brownsville officials said.

In December Ahumada was cited after police officers responded to a welfare concern call regarding Ahumada’s two pit bull dogs that were left unattended inside a vehicle parked on the 1000 block of E. Levee Street outside CityPlaza in Brownsville.

Ahumada was cited with inhumane treatment and safety of animal in a motor vehicle.

City officials on Wednesday said charges were dismissed in January due to insufficient evidence.

At the time he was cited, Ahumada said the call to the Brownsville Police Department was nothing more than an attempt to hurt his reputation. He alleged the call was made by a member of one of the local rescue groups.

Ahumada is the founder of Brownsville PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving), a nonprofit organization for the humane treatment of animals that was founded in 2007.
