Australia: Firefighters rescue cat and family from burning house

AUSTRALIA -- QUICK-thinking firefighters have pulled an unconscious cat from a burning house in Bundoora, using oxygen to bring it back to life.

The kitten was pulled unconscious from her burning home in Sandhurst Crescent yesterday morning by MFB senior station officer Garry Cronin, who found it under a bed in the front bedroom.

“I’m amazed she is alive as the room I found her in was blackened and charred,” Mr Cronin said.
“She wasn’t conscious when we found her, but she came around and we pumped her full of oxygen and she was doing better.

“We evacuated four to five children and their mother and other fire crews rescued a small dog inside the house as well.”

The cat also suffered burns to its paws and was taken for veterinarian treatment.

Fire crews from Thomastown, Epping, Bundoora and Greensborough were called to the house, where flames were shooting from the roof.

Mr Cronin said the blaze was under investigation, but is believed to have started in an evaporative air-cooling system in the roof.

“The house is severely damaged as a result of the fire,” he said.

“These sort of coolers, evaporative coolers, need to be serviced yearly for safety purposes.”
