Florida: Auburndale man Tabarus Johnson accused of setting fire to mattress, killing 2 dogs

FLORIDA -- An Auburndale man was arrested Wednesday, accused of setting fire to a woman's mattress, killing two dogs and causing $8,000 in damage.

According to Auburndale Police Department reports, Tabarus Andrew Johnson, 36, got into an argument with Fannie Lafumin, with whom he shared a home at 610 Pine St. in Auburndale, on March 19.

A witness, Toni Lycans, told detectives she saw Johnson and Lafumin arguing in their front yard, and when Lafumin attempted to get in her car and leave, Johnson jumped on the hood, shouting “Oh, it's gonna be like that?”

Johnson ran inside the home and Lafumin left.

Ten minutes later, Lycan told detectives, Johnson ran from the house as smoke billowed from the windows.

State Fire Marshal detective Greg Bubb found “the fire resulted from the intentional act of placing an open flame or similar type of device onto the bedding and combustible material on the bedding mattress,” according to reports. Fire, heat, smoke and water damages totaled $8,000.

“Inside the home were five dogs,” the report states, “two of which were tied up with leashes… the two dogs that were tied up were found deceased.”

The other three dogs were rescued and suffered smoke inhalation, requiring oxygen masks to breathe properly.

Johnson is being held in the Polk County jail without bail, charged with first-degree arson, two counts of felony animal cruelty and three counts of misdemeanor cruelty.

Johnson also has two active warrants from Alachua County on larceny and fraud charges.

Johnson has a significant criminal history to include Fugitive from Justice, Use a License from Another, No Valid DL, Burglary of a Dwelling, Grand Theft, Uttering a False Bank Note, Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, Possession of Narcotics Paraphernalia, Petit Theft, Forgery, Fraud Swindle, and Fraudulent Use of Personal Identification.

Most notably, Johnson was stabbed during a home invasion in 2014: "Ms. Hunt was in her bedroom on her laptop when she turned to see an unknown male standing in her room. Johnson lunged at her, grabbed her purse and began striking her when she yelled for help. Ms. Hunt’s adult son, David Hunt, was in an adjacent bedroom and ran down the hallway, upon hearing his mother yelling, and saw Johnson kicking and punching his mother.

"When Mr. Hunt yelled at Johnson to stop and get out, Johnson began advancing on him. Mr. Hunt armed himself with a kitchen knife to defend himself. During the violent encounter, Mr. Hunt stabbed and slashed Johnson several times in what appears to be self defense. During the struggle, Johnson was able to take the knife from Mr. Hunt and attempted to stab him. Johnson was not successful in his attempts to stab Mr. Hunt."
