Nebraska: Gary Furtwangler, 56, sentenced to TWO DAYS in jail for shooting and killing family's dog named Copper

NEBRASKA -- A Waverly man who shot a family’s dog in August was sentenced to two days in jail on Friday.

Gary Furtwangler, 56, shot Copper, a 9-year-old Vizsla who later died in surgery, with an air rifle after the dog ran into his yard on Aug. 18.

Furtwangler, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to two days in jail, 24 months of probation and 160 hours of community service for a first offense of animal cruelty, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The dog’s owners Lucas and Kerry Ropte had Copper off his leash the night he was shot. The two were practicing football with their two children on Waverly Intermediate School’s football field around 7:15 p.m. when Copper ran into Furtwangler’s yard.

Lincoln County Sheriff Terry Wagner said the two heard a single shot. Copper ran back to them, but they discovered a BB pellet had passed through one of his hind legs.

Copper’s vets were optimistic about his recovery after seeing the pellet missed most of the dogs internal organs and successfully removing eight inches worth of intestines. However, Copper died during a blood transfusion.
