North Carolina: Mooresville woman Gayle Craig charged with animal cruelty after 90 cats found in home

NORTH CAROLINA -- A case of cat hoarding in Mooresville has the owner facing 92 charges.

Gayle Craig is charged with 90 counts of animal cruelty and two counts of failure to properly dispose of a deceased animal.

She is expected in court in May

The cats were surrendered to the Iredell County Animal Shelter where workers hope to find them homes.

"We've been working with rescues both in and out of the state,” said Animal Services Director Brad Gates.

Gates says they’re also focused on pursuing charges against the owner of the cats. Investigators say the cats were living in an unhealthy environment.

About half of the rescued cats have been adopted. Gates tells FOX 46 it’s important to move forward with the charges against Craig, but it’s also important to not set aside the needs of the cats.

"Our number one priority is getting the cats in new homes and new environments where they can live a healthy life,” said Gates.
