While police have opened an inquest docket into the matter, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA confirmed on Monday that Anthony du Plessis did not break the law when his dogs Paco and Rocco attacked Wayne Kayster in his backyard on Monday.
Du Plessis says his two male dogs were protecting his property when Paco was shot at his home along First Avenue and Old Strandfontein Road, Lotus River.
“The dog was tested clinically and the owner was not contravening any by-laws, so there was no reason to remove the dog or get law enforcement involved,” explains Belinda.
Paco and Rocco mauled 35-year-old Kayster to death in an ordeal that was captured on video.
Residents said on Facebook that Kayster was a known crook who tried to break into Anthony’s home while he was out. However, his family has denied the allegations, saying the scrap collector was dragged over the wall by the dogs when he peeped into the yard.
His sister Theresa Demas, 39, said Anthony knew Wayne, who apparently went to the house regularly looking for scrap.
Kayster was still alive when police shot Paco, but he died hours later in hospital.
