Oregon: Bend men charged with animal abuse in separate cases

OREGON -- Two Bend men were charged with first-degree aggravated animal abuse this week in separate incidents involving a dog and cat.

Ethan Allen Buck, 23, allegedly beat his girlfriend’s Labrador retriever Chevy, 7, severely, according to a news release from the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office. Buck, who was upset with the Lab, according to the release, lifted her over his head before he “slammed” her on the ground and started kicking her ribs. He grabbed the dog’s neck, scolding her, and she bit him.

Buck then held her neck to punch the dog in the face. Chevy suffered serious injuries, according to the DA’s office, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Glen William Lacoss, 55, disliked his neighbor’s cat, Sweetie, coming into his yard, according to the release. Lacoss set up a snare and trapped Sweetie. He then hung the cat over the fence by her neck.

According to the DA’s office, markings on the fence show Sweetie struggled before she died.

Lacoss said he thought it was his right to do this because the cat came in his yard, according to the release.

In a statement in the release, District Attorney John Hummel said the men “are presumed innocent and entitled to their day in court.”

“However, my office will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law and if they are convicted, we will seek a significant penalty,” Hummel said.

Each of the men’s cases will be presented to a grand jury prior to their next court hearings Wednesday.
