Pennsylvania: See what cops say happened after exhausted puppy stopped walking

PENNSYLVANIA -- An Easton man is charged with animal cruelty after dragging a 7-week-old puppy by the leash when the exhausted animal could no longer walk, city police report.

Alexis Torres, 32, of the first block of South Locust Street, also hit and kicked the female dog when it wouldn't walk, police said.

The dog had "severe abrasions and lacerations" to all four paws and legs, along with abrasions to the abdomen, police said. The puppy's nails were completely ground down from being dragged at 1:03 a.m. Friday in the first block of South Locust, police said.

The puppy early Friday morning was awaiting veterinary care, police said.

The dog appeared to be a pit bull or pit bull mix, police said. Officers dressed and cleaned up the dog's injuries once it was brought to the police station, Capt. Scott Casterline said.

The name of the dog wasn't immediately clear, police said.

In most cases, the cruelty charge is a summary offense, according to Pennsylvania's crime code. It can be a misdemeanor if it's a repeat offense, the code says.
