Arizona: Family comes home to find 8 dogs dead; officials suspect poisoning

ARIZONA -- A family in Phoenix is heartbroken after they came home to find 8 of their 12 dogs dead.

Investigators believe someone deliberately poisoned them.

This happened at a home near Indian School Road and 85th Avenue.

 

Saturday, police will be going door to door trying to gather as much information they can, in hopes of making an arrest.

"They didn't deserve it," said Vanessa Guzman, who along with her mom and dad found 8 of their 12 family dogs were found dead in their Phoenix backyard.

Imagine what the 13-year-old must have been going through when she found them all taking what was likely their last breaths.

"They just started twitching and crying and then they just died out of nowhere. It was like heartbreaking. They were just there dead. It was just sad seeing them like that," said Guzman.

Four dogs survived what police believe was a deliberate poisoning.


A heartless attack investigators are calling vicious and cruel and one that's lead to a full scale investigation in hopes of finding those responsible.

"My mom says they probably till they left so they could throw the poison or something," said Guzman.

Cops say they're confident they'll make an arrest and hopefully be able to give the Guzman's and other victims a little closure.
   

"They were like family. They were like my little brothers," said Guzman.

Right now, the dogs that died are being examined and tests are being performed to try and figured what exactly killed them.
   
Police say call them if you have experienced something similar with your pet.

Since the incident, Phoenix police Animal Cruelty detectives have discovered other pets in an area including 85th Avenue and West Fairmont, and 85th Avenue and West Indianola Avenue were also victims. Two dogs died from an unknown source between May 5 and May 22.


Another pet was found to have been injured, possibly by an icepick-type object.

The Phoenix Police Department is asking the public's assistance with this investigation.
