ARKANSAS -- A Jonesboro woman cited with animal cruelty reportedly told an officer she saw nothing wrong leaving a Rottweiler locked up in a cage without food, water or shelter.
On Monday, Jonesboro Animal Control Officer Eric Schmett investigated a report of a dog left in a cage in the 2500-block of Brooke McQueen.
When he arrived at the home, he reported finding a Rottweiler in a small cage in the backyard. According to the initial incident report, the dog “couldn’t even turn around or stand up completely.”
Schmett noted the dog did not have any shelter or water.
When no one answered the door, Schmett left a door hanger.
Tuesday morning Schmett returned to the home and found the dog in the same cage.
“It appeared to have been left out in the rain,” Schmett stated.
Schmett spoke with the owner, 27-year-old Doniece Clariece Harper, and told her why he was there.
According to the report, Harper said she “wasn’t sure how long the dog had been in the cage.”
Schmett told her the cage was too small and that it needed shelter and water.
“She didn’t see anything wrong with the dog being in the cage,” Schmett reported. “And [she] was more concerned about leaving.”
Schmett cited Harper with no state rabies, improper confinement and animal cruelty.
