Idaho: Caldwell toddler mauled; dog will be euthanized

IDAHO -- The attack last week left 19-month-old Riley Ireland with deep gashes that police said weren’t life-threatening, but left the child hospitalized.

“Riley's right arm was ripped open in several spots by the dog’s teeth, as it attempted to drag him thru the gap in the fence by his arm into its own yard to do what we believe would have ended up being a fatal mauling,” Riley’s mother, Miranda Martinez, said on the family’s GoFundMe page.

She said the family’s dog defended Riley and made the attacking dog let go, giving her time to scoop up her son and call 911.

The dog’s owner — Fern Clement, 60 — agreed to voluntarily have her veterinarian put down the dog, since this was not its first sign of aggression, Caldwell police said.

Clement has also been charged with a misdemeanor for having a vicious dog. An arraignment on that charge has been scheduled for May 16 in Canyon County Court.

The attack happened at 9:30 a.m. April 27 in the 1900 block of Beach Street while the boy played on a swingset, police said. Caldwll Police Lt. Joey Hoadley said the dog stuck its head through a hole in the family’s fence and grabbed the boy . Martinez said the dog knocked down a slat in the wooden fence.

From their GoFundMePage: "Riley sustained 2 deep injuries, one to his upper arm that is about 5 inches long, and required many stitches to put back together. He also sustained a deep wound to his forearm that also required stitches to close, along with trails of teeth marks on his lower arm, bruising to his collar bone, rib cage, and splinters in his face from being forced violently and repeatedly against the wooden privacy fence by the dog trying to bring him back to his yard."

Riley is the son of Martinez and Randy Ireland. A GoFundMe page, Riley’s recovery from mauling, had raised more than $4,000 by Friday, but Martinez said Friday night that donations are no longer being accepted. The page remains online, she said, to share Riley’s story.

"Thank you again to everyone. We truly cannot express the amount of gratitude that we feel, and how it has made an impact on this family. This will forever stay with our family, and will be a reminder to always keep our eyes open to help someone else in need, and support those who are struggling, as we know now that no matter how simple it seems to just say 'I'm praying for you', the impact it makes is tremendous. "
