Indiana: Press release announcing capture of one of the top 10 fugitives of Indiana, convicted animal abuser Jane Burkart

INDIANA -- A press release issued Feb. 10, 2016, by the sheriff’s office:

“The Fugitive Apprehension Street Team announces the arrest of Jane Marie Burkart, 55. Burkart had been sought by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office for a Probation Violation/Failure to Appear following a conviction on 16 counts of Cruelty to an Animal, class D Felonies, and 5 counts of Neglect to an Animal, class B Misdemeanors.

“The living conditions were just totally unacceptable, there was manure up to the knees on the horses liquefied, it was just not a healthy environment,” said Jane Bernard, Executive Director of La Porte County Small Animal Shelter.

“Burkart’s case began in March of 2007 where she was subsequently found guilty in La Porte County Superior Court 4. A portion of Burkart’s sentence was to be served on probation along with restitution paid to the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter. Burkart failed to comply with probation, for which a violation was filed. Burkart was found guilty of violating probation, however she appealed the verdict to the Indiana Court of Appeals. On April 18, 2013, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld the conviction from Judge William Boklund.

“On April 24, 2013, a warrant was issued by LaPorte County Superior Court 4 for the probation violation. The warrant imposed a 900-day jail sentence to be served by Burkart. Prior to serving the sentence, Burkart fled the area and has been a fugitive since that time. FAST (LaPorte County Fugitive Apprehension Street Team) conducted several interviews with relatives and associates of Burkart. A social media post in 2015 garnered several tips that greatly aided investigators.

“Through those tips an address was located in Sacramento, California, for Burkhart. FAST sent a lead through the United States Marshal’s Service to California. On Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, Burkart was taken into custody by the Sacramento office of the United States Marshal’s Service. Burkart is currently being held in the Sacramento County Jail awaiting extradition to LaPorte County. Once returned to LaPorte County she will begin to serve the 900-day sentence.

“FAST is appreciative of all the agencies involved in the assistance of taking Burkart into custody, including the LaPorte County Animal Shelter, LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office and the United States Marshal’s Service. Investigators also praised the public for forwarding tips and information that ultimately led to Burkart’s capture.”
