Ohio: Columbus woman, Cristiana Holloway, 32, pleads out on animal cruelty charges

OHIO -- Jackson County Dog Warden Deb Fout wants the citizens of Jackson County to know that animal cruelty will not be tolerated if she and her staff have anything to say about it.

Fout cited a case that was recently held in Jackson County Municipal Court where a Columbus woman appearing in court in Jackson County left her dog in the vehicle for over an hour with temperatures inside the vehicle right at 104 degrees.

Cristiana Nicole Holloway, 32, of Columbus was originally cited for the offense on Friday, April 22. At her arraignment on April 27, Holloway appeared, pled not guilty, had an attorney appointed, was set up with her next hearing date, and was released on an OR bond of $7,500.

On Tuesday, May 17, she returned to court and pled out on her charge. She was fined $250 and placed on five years probation.

Fout and Assistant Dog Warden Jennifer Hughes are serious about the jobs they do, and both have expressed a love and compassion for dogs, so they want everyone to be forewarned that they don't take mistreatment of animals lightly.

As much as some residents may love their dogs, and as much as some dogs love to ride in a car, Fout and Hughes want to caution citizens to never leave a dog in a hot car, even for a little while. In just a few minutes, cars can reach temperatures well above 100 degrees, even with windows cracked open or partially opened sun roofs.

The staff at the pound caution that it is better to leave a dog in the comfort of its own home, than to risk its death for a car ride, especially if the dog's owner plans to make several stops during the trip.

With the heat of summer approaching, they would also like to remind everyone that outside dogs need clean cold water everyday, they need some type of shelter to protect them from the elements, and they need food just like every other living creature does.

Dogs can get sunburned or suffer heatstroke just like humans can, so they need some type of protection from the sun's glare.

Fout and Hughes also want to remind citizens that they are still spot-checking various areas of the county on a continuing basis for dog tags. No one really knows where they might show up next, so residents who do not have tags, face a stiff $180 fine per dog, in addition to paying double the price for the tags they didn't purchase before the designated deadline.

It is the money from dog tags that keeps the dog pound operating throughout the year. Dog tag dollars pay the salaries for the warden and assistant warden, pay the utility bills, buy cleaning supplies, dog food, and is used for the purchases of essentials at the pound. They do not have a set budget like the other county departments do, so every tag sold puts more money in the coffers for the operations of the pound.

While Fout and Hughes will do their best to be the voice of the dogs in abuse cases, they are also willing to help or educate dog owners about the things they need to do to keep their dogs happy and healthy.

The staff at the dog pound, volunteer members of The Humane Society of Jackson County, the Jackson County Prosecutor, and the county judges, are all working together to stop animal cruelty in the county.

"We are not tolerating cruelty to animals," Fout stated.

Both the pound and the Humane Society, who are totally different entities who work together for the well-being of animals in the community, can always use donations of food, supplies, or money, to help them take care of the animals removed from abusive homes.
Anyone who observes animal abuse should report it immediately to the Humane Society of Jackson County. Their phone numbers are 740-286-6435 or 740-288-7297. It may be necessary to leave a message, but someone will call back when they get the opportunity.

The number for the dog pound is 740-286-7262.
