TENNESSEE -- A Maryville woman who was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital earlier this week after being attacked by a pit bull is in stable condition at Blount Memorial Hospital.
Hospital staff said Friday evening that Angela R. Gilbert, 48, of Pea Ridge Road, was in stable condition and improving. Gilbert was transported to the hospital Monday night after being attacked by a pit bull at her residence, according to a Blount County Sheriff’s Office report.
Deputies responded to Gilbert’s home in the 4800 block of Pea Ridge Road Monday night and spoke with Scott E. Carmichael, who resides on neighboring Primrose Circle. Carmichael said he heard Gilbert screaming for help and arrived to find Gilbert being attacked by a pit bull, according to the report.
A dog belonging to Gilbert was trying to fight off the pit bull, Carmichael said. Carmichael said he ended up shooting the pit bull with his .45-caliber Glock handgun before deputies arrived.
Gilbert told deputies she was looking after the pit bull for a Tallassee man, according to the report.
She was working in the flower bed in her backyard when the pit bull — which was chained to a tree — broke free and attacked her for no reason, Gilbert told deputies.
Bad cuts, possible broken arm
Gilbert sustained severe lacerations to her right arm and a possible broken bone in the attack, deputies said. Blount County Animal Control took possession of the deceased animal for testing, the report said.
Deputies tried contacting the owner of the dog, identified by Gilbert as Vincent Molina III, 24, of Happy Valley Road, but they could not immediately reach him, the report said. The Daily Times called a number reportedly associated with Molina, and received a return phone call from a woman who stated she was Molina’s mother.
While she did not comment on the incident, she said she would have her son contact The Daily Times. A reporter did not immediately hear back from either subject.
