TENNESSEE -- A Montgomery County woman’s dog was hit by a dump truck multiple times after it broke off of its leash.
Nina, a 9-year-old pit bull/boxer mix, broke off her leash to chase another dog and ran underneath the wheel of a moving dump truck. The driver of the truck then stopped.
“When he stopped, he didn’t know how far up under the truck the dog was. He never got out,” said Glen Nis, a witness.
The incident was captured on video. What happened next had witnesses screaming.
“The dog was still alive trying to get up,” said Corey Banks, the dog owner’s roommate. “He said the dog would die in five minutes. He told the neighbors that so I guess that’s why he backed up off of it and said, ‘Don’t watch.’ And he hit it again and drug it a little bit.”
The woman screaming in the video is the dog’s owner.
“She couldn’t look at it. When he hit it, she went back in because she was crying and screaming,” Banks said.
Jeannette Farrell with Montgomery County Animal Control went to the scene. She said the first thing the driver should have done was call 911.
“Go out and assess the situation, call 911, and then they can advise you what to do,” Farrell said.
Channel 4 reached out to McIntosh Construction, the company that owns the dump truck. They issued the following statement:
We at McIntosh Construction take this issue very seriously. We (and the truck drive involved) are all very sadden (sic) by the tragic accident that happened yesterday. Since this is an ongoing investigation we will withhold comment at this time.
“I hope he feels sorry for hitting that dog, because he didn’t get out,” Banks said. “He should have gotten out to see what was going on.”
Montgomery County Animal Control said they will be reviewing the video with the district attorney to see if any charges will be filed.
