TEXAS -- A Killeen woman who was charged with animal cruelty after the three German shepherds she left in her car died admits she made an awful mistake and is hoping other pet owners will learn a lesson from her loss.
Libby Harris-Brown has a houseful of dogs and cats, all of them rescues, and three of the dogs got out when a cable installer arrived to do some work at her home on Thursday.
She got in her car, tracked the three dogs down, loaded them in the vehicle, and then drove home, where the installer was waiting.
She says she left the dogs in the car while she went inside to get leashes, but the installer stopped her before she could head back outside to tell her what about the work he’d done.
By the time he finished, she says, she’d forgotten that the dogs were still in the car.
Some time later, when she realized the three pets were still in the car, she rushed back outside and with the help of neighbors removed the dogs from the vehicle.
“I see all the fogged up windows and I say ‘oh my God, my dogs," she remembered.
But by the time she got there, two of the dogs were dead.
The third had to be euthanized.
Police were called, and officers advised her to take the dogs to an emergency pet clinic.
"I feel guilty. I cannot live with it, she said. “I cried all night, I didn't sleep.”
The official high temperature Thursday in Central Texas was 84 degrees, but experts say even on a relatively mild day, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can rise by 30 or 40 degrees within a matter of less than 30 minutes.
Harris-Brown says she hopes other pet owners won’t make the mistake she did.
"Don't leave your animals, don't take them with you if you go shopping or whatever,” she said.
“Keep them at home where it's cool or in the backyard don't take them with you."
