UNITED KINGDOM -- A much-loved family pet has died after allegedly being set upon by two dogs in what the distraught owner has described as "a ruthless attack".
Oscar, an eight-year-old Jack Russell, was left with wounds so severe that vets were unable to help after he was allegedly attacked by a rottweiler and another dog at Quarry Cottage, Liskeard, last Friday.
The Jack Russell's owner, Cheryl Shearn, says she was gardening just feet away when the two dogs attacked shortly before 7pm but was powerless to intervene.
"These two dogs came in to our garden and attacked Oscar, for no reason," she said.
"It was awful. I was gardening at the time when I heard this dog yelping. I turned and saw a rottweiler and another dog, a cross-breed of some sort, biting at Oscar.
"I shouted and waved my arms at them both, but they didn't stop. I had to scoop Oscar up off the ground after they left. He was breathing still but by the time we got him to the vets, there was nothing they could do to stabilise him."
And Ms Shearn says it is not the first she has been forced to contact the police regarding a dog attack on her land.
In February, her son's Jack Russell, called Barney, was allegedly attacked by a rottweiler. Its chest was punctured and windpipe torn out, according to Ms Shearn, but vets were able to intervene and treat his wounds.
"I reported the incident to the police and they told me the dog would be kept under control," she added. "And now this has happened, just a few months later. I am worried for the safety of my grandchildren.
"They often visit and play in the garden - what if these two dogs break in again?"
It is not yet clear who the dogs belong to, however the incident is currently being investigated by police.
