Oregon: Oregon State Police Troopers bring rescued piglet to 1st Avenue Shelter

OREGON -- Oregon State Police officers responded to a report of a dog running alongside Interstate 5 Tuesday night. But when they arrived, they didn't find a dog. Instead, they rescued a piglet.

According to police, they received a call at approximately 10:15 p.m. The caller reported a dog running southbound in the northbound median of I-5 near milepost 191, south of Eugene.

When troopers arrived, they found a female piglet on the run.

They say the piglet weighs approximately 30 to 40 pounds and is white with black spots. They believe she is three to five weeks old.

Officials say the piglet was not wearing any identifying collars or tags.

They captured the piglet and brought it to 1st Avenue Shelter in Eugene.

When the piglet arrived, shelter staff say she was very sweet. They even gave her a name they say suits her personality.

"So the kennel staff met her and she immediately rolled over for belly rubs and was very affectionate, so they named her Dahlia because they thought it was a very pretty little princess name for a very pretty little pig," said Lauren Merge from Greenhill Humane Society.

The shelter says the piglet's owner claimed her Tuesday afternoon.

They say it is uncommon, but not unheard of to rescue pigs in the Eugene area.
