Pennsylvania: Eleven dogs found dead in Erie home; four found still alive

Leanne Stuck JET 24-Fox 66: "We are on the scene of a major animal cruelty situation, 11 dogs found dead in a home in the 3500 block of Cherry Street. The Humane Society found four dogs alive and they are being rescued at this time."

PENNSYLVANIA -- The smell coming from an Erie home in the 3500 block of Cherry Street was so strong that neighbors said their houses were filling with flies, causing them to call law enforcement.

When animal cruelty officers arrived, they found 11 rotting dog corpses inside a house at 3502 Cherry St. on Friday afternoon.

"It is one of the worst I have seen unfortunately," said Lisa Stiles, chief investigating officer for the Humane Society of Northwest Pennsylvania. "I had to call code enforcement because it is uninhabitable for the human as well."

The Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania rescued four living dogs among the 11 dead from the scene.

The four dogs are being treated by a veterinarian at the humane society.

The deceased dogs are unidentifiable.

Officers said they may not be able to determine how the dogs died and said they could have been LYING DEAD inside the home for more than a year.

The owner of the property, whose name was not released, was present when the warrant was executed. He may face animal neglect and cruelty charges, plus unsanitary living conditions.

The homeowner was present during the raid

No charges were filed against the homeowner on Friday.

Officers are working to gather evidence.
