Texas: Border Patrol K9 named Lazer dies from heat exhaustion while trying to apprehend illegal aliens

TEXAS -- A Border Patrol K-9 died Monday in the line of duty in South Texas, officials said.

K-9 Lazer was working with his handler to locate a group of undocumented immigrants on a ranch in Falfurrias when he started to show signs of heat exhaustion, officials said.

His handler quickly noticed the signs and took him to a veterinary clinic to cool off and receive treatment but he died of heat exhaustion.

"Our sector suffered a great loss," said Chief Patrol Agent Manuel Padilla Jr. "These loyal companions have given their lives to ensure their handlers, fellow agents and our community members stay safe."

Lazer was credited with 93 human apprehensions as a part of the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Search, Trauma, and Rescue team.
