United Kingdom: RSPCA rescue badger cub from Southend canal

UNITED KINGDOM -- The RSPCA have rescued a stranded badger cub who had become stuck along a stretch of canal near Southend after taking an unplanned dip.

RSPCA animal collection officer Lucy Fackerell was alerted by a member of the public on Wednesday (June 15) who had found the badger running up and down a stretch of canal in Westcliff-on-Sea.

The badger could not scale the four foot concrete embankment to get himself away from the canal and back to his sett.

Lucy called for RSPCA inspector Marie Hammerton to come and help her rescue the young badger.

Lucy said: "It was very slippy with lots of moss around so I think the poor badger must have fallen down into the canal.

"Fortunately, I managed to locate an active sett directly behind where the cub was scrabbling to get up. So once caught, the cub was released and quickly scurried down the sett.

"I'm so pleased we were able to help this little one out and that it had a happy ending."

The RSPCA are only able to carry out rescues like this with the public's help. Text HELP to 78866 to give £3 to their cause (text costs £3 + one standard network rate message).
