California: K9 officer recovering after being stabbed by fleeing marijuana grower

CALIFORNIA -- According to the Trinity County Sheriff's Office, K9 Johnny remains in stable condition, he was kept overnight for observation and will be receiving a drain this afternoon to help his wounds heal.

He may get to go home this evening. K9 Johnny is expected to make a full recovery with physical therapy and is expected to return to his regular duties in as early as a month.

According to the family of K9 Johnny, he is doing well and will be going home soon.


In a post on Facebook by the fiance of Johnny's handler, Julie Hemenway, she said, "I just wanted to give everyone an update. First, thank you Trinity Animal Hospital. They are doing so well with Johnny. They have gone above and beyond for us." Hemenway added, "Johnny was a ball of energy this morning, he came trotting through the vet office like nothing happened, wagging his tail and marking his territory. The wound missed all vitals and jugular by grace of god. He will be recovering and hopefully gets to come home tonight!".

Officials said around 7:00 a.m. Thursday, Trinity County Sheriff's Dispatch was notified by a Trinity County Sheriff Deputy, working with Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) in a remote undisclosed location eradicating marijuana, that K9 Office Johnny had been stabbed and needed medical attention.

K9 Johnny had entered the marijuana grow with his handler when multiple suspects started to run from the area. K9 Johnny was able to apprehend one suspect who officers detained and then went after the second suspect who was carrying a 10-inch knife and pistol.

Officials said the second suspect stabbed K9 Johnny in the left side of his neck with the 10-inch knife and ran into the woods. Officers recovered the knife and pistol but were not able to locate the second suspect.

Officials identified the first suspect as Clemente Lopez, 32, from Mexico.

K9 Johnny was flown by the California Highway Patrol helicopter to the Weaverville Airport where he was then transported to a local animal hospital.
