Florida: Animal-cruelty suspect stepped on flea-infested puppy, cops say

FLORIDA -- A Groveland woman was arrested and accused of stepping on a puppy Tuesday, police said.

Antoinette Welcome-Rydell, 61, faces a charge of animal cruelty.

The incident took place July 2. A few witnesses told police they saw Welcome-Rydell dropping a puppy on the ground in a parking lot off State Road 50, then stepping on the dog, police said.

"The dog was extremely dehydrated, anemic, lethargic, had fleas and had an open laceration on its neck from an unknown source," Officer Heather Vinson wrote in a report.

Welcome-Rydell allegedly told officers that she was on prescription medications. They did not specify which.

Police did not immediately respond to questions about the dog's correct condition or whereabouts on Tuesday.

Welcome-Rydell is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
